When we start out playing a stringed instruments, we all strive for straight or parallel bowing. At first, it seems almost impossible to get the bow to travel in a straight line. After a while, it becomes second nature. Why I do I mention this? After getting pretty decent with straight bowing, my teacher started me on Figure 8 bowing (not sure if this is the exact term, but for this blog post, I’ll call it that ). I really feel that Figure 8 bowing technique improves my tone and projection but straight bowing is ingrained / I don’t have to think about it, and its difficult to change to figure 8 bowing. It’s getting there but it will take some time. Please watch the video for explanation and demonstration of Figure 8 bowing.
